A special Day of Remembrance Ceremony was held Sunday, June 2nd
on the West Islip High School Field. Sponsored jointly by
WEST ISLIP REMEMBERS and WEST ISLIP LIONHEART,
this program memorialized the victims of the September 11
tragedy, and acknowledged the tremendous contributions made
by local uniformed services personnel, rescue workers, and others
in the recovery efforts that followed in the wake of the attack.
It was also an occasion to thank the community for its outpouring
of support, and to acknowledge the work of those involved
in coordinating the various support programs.
New York State Troopers presented the colors and escorted students
in a moving tribute as single roses were placed on each of
ten empty chairs that symbolized the West Islip community members
lost on September 11, 2001.
Music selections were performed by the West Islip Fire Department
Band and West Islip High School students.
Closing the ceremony, WEST ISLIP REMEMBERS President Eliot F. Bloom
announced plans for the permanent memorial to be placed
at Higbie Lane and Montauk Highway on the Library grounds.
